In times of war, it was the fighting skills learned from karate that were the main reason to train, in times of peace, health and character development took precedence and now we have the competition side of karate, which is huge! Master Gichin Funakoshi, who was the founder of Shotokan karate, believed the development of character was the most important part of the martial arts. He believed and passed on the philosophy of, no first attack in karate. It seems modern day martial arts go into one, or a combination of four directions, 1.Self defense. 2.Fitness. 3.Health and character development. 4.Competition training. The self defense aspect of karate is plain to see, but if the karateka (someone who practices karate), doesn’t train with the correct attitude, it doesn’t matter how many moves they learn, or for how long they train, they WILL be ineffective in a street situation. Fitness The physical gains seen by practicing karate are obvious. Karate is very anaerobic, short explos …

There are cheerleading clinics that train cheerleaders how to execute their stunts properly and effectively. Among the cheerleading stunts perfected throughout the years are toe touches, pikes, hurdlers and herkies. Toe touch is the most popular stunt and the easiest to execute. It s done by making one clean jump with both legs spread in the air while the hands touch the toes. The least favourite is the pike, because one virtually has to fold their body in half while in mid air. Stomach muscles have to be strong in order to jump high and perform the stunt. Tumbling is also a big part of cheerleading. It includes back tucks, back handspring, back walkovers, cartwheels, aerials and round offs. The easiest is the cartwheel, as almost all kids are required to this in physical education classes. Aside from the spectacular stunts performed, cheerleaders are also responsible for spotting and catching their teammates who do the potentially dangerous stunts. If teammates are not caught prope …

What is going on, and why do they do this? My cat Beau is deaf and is very physical in expressing himself. He loves to be touched, petted and kissed. His reaction back is to “chew” on me, sort of gnawing his teeth against my arm, as he purrs. I soon realized that this is out of caring, not out of defensiveness. He does this whenever he is deliriously happy, and it’s sort of like he’s trying to kiss me back but does it with his little teeth. Lucky me. I appreciate him for being so loving, and just show love back, but back off if he chomps a little too hard. When your cat does this, don’t hit or get mad, just gently brush it off and distract him to do something else. Cats respond to suggestion, professional trainers rely on this principle to train them. By giving kitty something else to think about, he will forget about gnawing on you and put his attention elsewhere. Though I’m not an animal behaviorist, I know what works for my cats, and use information learned by those in the know. A …

A Gymnastic Riding System Using Mind, Body, and Spirit: Progressive Training for Rider and Horse A Gymnastic Riding System Using Mind, Body, and Spirit: Progressive Training for Rider and Horse

A unique, highly illustrated book that offers training techniques for the mind, body, and spirit of both rider and horse, including a specially designed Pilates program for riders.

Customer Review: communicate with your horse
This book does a great job of going through the development of rider and horse from the beginning. It teaches you all of the elements you need to be able to have a real relationship with your horse that is based on trust.
Customer Review: A must read
Definitely a “must have” for all those interested in dressage as a sport and for other diciplines wishing to improve their horses. Gives a well-rounded approach to riding including being responsible as riders to be sympathetic and diciplined.
I especially liked the chapter about the horse’s willingness and how to improve that. I give Betsy Steiner a lot of credit for making dressage theory clear and practical while speaking to those with years of experience. Great pictures and summary tables to clarify the rather detailed training maps. After many half-read dressage books that seem repetitive this one will be one I can use in real life as I train on my own at the moment.
I look forward to more of Betsy’s work.
