So, what is the definition of planes in gymnastics? A place, in terms of movement, is described as an area of space around the body through which we can swing the apparatus, or indeed move the body. It is a directional term used in relation to the body itself, and helps to identify the various pathways of movement (there are three) of both the body and the apparatus. It is important that these planes are understood and used, so that the movement of the apparatus is clear and precise, and definite changes from one place to another are apparent. The three are: 1. The sagittal or wheel place. The vertical area at the side of the body through which the forward and backward swing is performed. 2. The frontal or door place.
