Bring the Olympics into your home by planning some activities and crafts to inspire your children to be active and experience the Olympic spirit. The Olympic Flag Explain to your child that the Olympic Flag is a very special flag. It has five interlocking colored rings on a white background. The rings represent the five major land areas, or continents, of the world. Show children these land areas on a map or globe. Explain that the rings are interlocked to show friendship among the different nations. Then, have your child paint or color interlocking rings on a sheet of white printing paper to resemble the Olympic Flag. Attach to a drinking straw for the handle. The Olympic Torch During opening ceremonies of the Olympics, a specially chosen person lights the Olympic cauldron to signal the official start of the games. The flame is kept burning during the entire length of the games. Have your child make his/her own Olympic torch and let the games begin! To make a simple torch, have your …

It was then that the International Gymnastics Federation gave official recognition to the various apparatus exercises, the rope, the hoop and the ball, and set up the first World Championships which were held in 1963. Not until some times later were the clubs and the ribbons events included. Since 1963, the World Championships have been held every alternate year, this being the major competition in the international calendar for rhythmic gymnastics. Gradually, other competitions have been introduced, European Championships were inaugurated in 1978, and then a Four Continents Championship, but the ultimate recognition for the sport was its inclusion in the Olympic Games for the first time in Los Angeles 1984. Current rules state that no more than two gymnasts per country are eligible for the Olympics, and that qualification is necessary before entry into the competition is allowed. The qualifying competition is a sudden death affair, just one chance in the World Championships preceding …

Horse sports were incorporated into the Olympic Games shortly after their initial inception when the four horse chariot race was introduced. In fact when you think of the Olympics, the huge stadium or hippodrome is one of the most powerful images. The word “hippodrome” which describes an open air sports stadium with a track around the edge, comes from the Greek word “hippos” for horse and “dromos” for racecourse. The equestrian events are made up of three disciplines - dressage, show jumping and the three-day event which includes both the other disciplines together with a grueling cross country ride over testing jumps. Each of the disciplines has both an individual and a team competition. Dressage is often referred to as ‘horse ballet’. It is a training method designed to develop a horse’s natural abilities and responsiveness to instructions from the rider. The original intent was to train the horse to make it easy to ride in any circumstances, and to enhance the horse’s natural gymna …

Johnson beat her friend and teammate Nastia Liukin on the balance beam in the last of the Olympic games gymnastic events to win the Gold. Johnson performed a powerful routine, as always. The 7.0 start value of her routine was the highest in the competition. She finished with a huge grin, scoring 16.225 to take over the lead. Liukin went next. Though she is the reigning world champion on the beam, her start value was 6.6, the third lowest among the eight final competitors. Her routine was graceful and smooth, as opposed to Johnson’s routine which was filled with difficult tricks. She finished with a 16.025 score, not good enough to pass Johnson, her on-going rival and Olympic roommate. Johnson who had already won 3 Silver medals was ecstatic to finally win a Gold in her final chance of this Olympics. Nastia Liukin did win the Gold Medal in the all a round competition and Johnson took the Silver. Together the two women have won 8 medals. Earlier in the games Johnson was narrowly edged o …

Gymnastics as we know it dates back to ancient Greece. The early Greeks practiced gymnastics to prepare for war. Activities like jumping, running, discus throwing, wrestling, and boxing helped develop the muscles needed for hand-to-hand combat. Additional fitness practices used by the ancient Greeks included methods for mounting and dismounting a horses and a variety of circus performance skills. Gymnastics became a central component of ancient Greek education and was mandatory for all students. Gymnasia, buildings with open-air courts where the training took place, evolved into schools where gymnastics, rhetoric, music, and mathematics were taught. The ancinet Olympic Games were born near this time. As the Roman Empire ascended, Greek gymnastics for was more or less turned into military training. In 393 AD the Emperor Theodosius abolished the Olympic Games completely. The games had become corrupt, and gymnastics, along with other sports declined. For centuries, gymnastics was all but …

It is also a very natural sport involving activities that people would normally do outside gym class or gymnastic competitions such as jumping, running, climbing, swinging and tumbling. Modern gymnastics as a sport involves the performance of a series of movements. These activities and movements require flexibility, physical strength and kinesthetic awareness. Most of the movements involved developed from the many fitness exercises that soldiers in Ancient Greece used. Gymnastics is also considered a somewhat difficult and dangerous sport because gymnasts are constantly exposed to injury. Gymnastics today is a sport that has six different disciplines: artistic gymnastics, rhythmic gymnastics, sports aerobics, sports acrobatics, trampoline work, and general gymnastics. Among these disciplines, artistic and rhythmic gymnastics are the two most popular and is part of the Summer Olympic Games held every four years. Rhythmic gymnastics on the other hand is performed mostly by women athlete …

Here are a few game ideas to get your Elvis party off to a great start. “What’s the Next Line?” Elvis Party Game Prior to the party, gather together implements that can be used as buzzers . Whistles, bells and shakers are all good. Guests gather around and split into pairs/small groups, depending on numbers. Hand out a buzzer to each team. Play snippets from 10-15 Elvis songs one after the other; if you want to make the Elvis party game easier, you can pre-prepare a tape or CD with just the chorus of each song. Someone from the first team to buzz in each time has to sing the next line singing is an absolute MUST, with no points being given for speaking the lines. The team with the most points at the end is the winner of this great Elvis party game. Elvis Statues As a rule, Elvis party games should allow guests to show off their best dance moves. This is a classic Elvis party game that does just that. Someone has to be in charge of the music, with everyone else on the dance flo …

When you add up the time a female gymnast actually performs in the Olympic Games, it seems fifteen minutes is just about right. Floor exercise and beam routines are one minute thirty seconds each, the bar routine takes about one minute, and two vaults at thirty seconds each comes out to about 5 minutes of actual competition. If you count the 5 minutes of competition in the compulsory portion of the Games, then another 5 minutes in the optional competition, and if the gymnast qualifies to compete on every apparatus in event finals, you could add another 5 minutes for a total of fifteen minutes of potential fame. Wow, the best fifteen minutes of your life! Unless, of course, you get your face plastered all over cereal boxes too! That is the dream of many young girls watching the Olympic Games on television. Maybe even you! But, and this is a big BUT, are you willing to put in the thousands of hours it will take to get to the Olympic level?. And, does it really take that much workout tim …

Try not to keep the hand too rigid as it will smack on the ball and you will have difficulty in controlling it. Unlike basketball in which the aim is to retain possession and so keep the ball close to the body, in rhythmic gymnastics it is necessary to extend the arm away from the body in order to maintain a graceful line and prepare for the following move with extension and swing. The body should also be flexible and resilient, so that the knees and ankles bend with each bounce and there is fluency about the action. Repeated bouncing, although needing to be practiced in the early learning stages, soon becomes boring and a more interesting variety of bounces should be introduced. This might include the following: high, medium or low bounces, bounces using each hand, bounces using both hands, bounces using other parts of the body, such as the foot, elbow, shoulder or knee, bounces rebounding off other parts, such as the shoulder, chest or leg. Almost anything goes, and it is worth expe …
