Let the Olympic Games Begin!Posted by: Mr.Admin in Gymnastic Sites and The Best ArticlesBring the Olympics into your home by planning some activities and crafts to inspire your children to be active and experience the Olympic spirit. The Olympic Flag Explain to your child that the Olympic Flag is a very special flag. It has five interlocking colored rings on a white background. The rings represent the five major land areas, or continents, of the world. Show children these land areas on a map or globe. Explain that the rings are interlocked to show friendship among the different nations. Then, have your child paint or color interlocking rings on a sheet of white printing paper to resemble the Olympic Flag. Attach to a drinking straw for the handle. The Olympic Torch During opening ceremonies of the Olympics, a specially chosen person lights the Olympic cauldron to signal the official start of the games. The flame is kept burning during the entire length of the games. Have your child make his/her own Olympic torch and let the games begin! Gymnastics and Olympic Games - What Other People Are Not Telling You About This SportPosted by: Mr.Admin in Gymnastic Sites and The Best ArticlesIt was then that the International Gymnastics Federation gave official recognition to the various apparatus exercises, the rope, the hoop and the ball, and set up the first World Championships which were held in 1963. Not until some times later were the clubs and the ribbons events included. Since 1963, the World Championships have been held every alternate year, this being the major competition in the international calendar for rhythmic gymnastics. Gradually, other competitions have been introduced, European Championships were inaugurated in 1978, and then a Four Continents Championship, but the ultimate recognition for the sport was its inclusion in the Olympic Games for the first time in Los Angeles 1984. Current rules state that no more than two gymnasts per country are eligible for the Olympics, and that qualification is necessary before entry into the competition is allowed. The qualifying competition is a sudden death affair, just one chance in the World Championships preceding … Tags: Competitions, Four Continents, Gymnasts, Inclusion, International Calendar, International Gymnastics Federation, Olympic Games, Olympics, People, Rhythmic Gymnastics, Ribbons, Rope, Sport, Sudden Death, Time In Los Angeles, World Championships

Equestrian Sports at the OlympicsPosted by: Mr.Admin in Gymnastic Sites and The Best ArticlesHorse sports were incorporated into the Olympic Games shortly after their initial inception when the four horse chariot race was introduced. In fact when you think of the Olympics, the huge stadium or hippodrome is one of the most powerful images. The word “hippodrome” which describes an open air sports stadium with a track around the edge, comes from the Greek word “hippos” for horse and “dromos” for racecourse. The equestrian events are made up of three disciplines - dressage, show jumping and the three-day event which includes both the other disciplines together with a grueling cross country ride over testing jumps. Each of the disciplines has both an individual and a team competition. Dressage is often referred to as ‘horse ballet’. It is a training method designed to develop a horse’s natural abilities and responsiveness to instructions from the rider. The original intent was to train the horse to make it easy to ride in any circumstances, and to enhance the horse’s natural gymna … Tags: Air Sports, Chariot Race, Competition Dressage, Dromos, Equestrian Events, Greek Word, Gymna, Hippodrome, Hippos, Horse Ballet, Horse Sports, Initial Inception, Natural Abilities, Olympic Games, Olympics Sports, Original Intent, Responsiveness, Sports Olympics, Sports Stadium, Team Competition

Gold Beaming From Shawn JohnsonPosted by: Mr.Admin in Gymnastic Sites and The Best ArticlesJohnson beat her friend and teammate Nastia Liukin on the balance beam in the last of the Olympic games gymnastic events to win the Gold. Johnson performed a powerful routine, as always. The 7.0 start value of her routine was the highest in the competition. She finished with a huge grin, scoring 16.225 to take over the lead. Liukin went next. Though she is the reigning world champion on the beam, her start value was 6.6, the third lowest among the eight final competitors. Her routine was graceful and smooth, as opposed to Johnson’s routine which was filled with difficult tricks. She finished with a 16.025 score, not good enough to pass Johnson, her on-going rival and Olympic roommate. Johnson who had already won 3 Silver medals was ecstatic to finally win a Gold in her final chance of this Olympics. Nastia Liukin did win the Gold Medal in the all a round competition and Johnson took the Silver. Together the two women have won 8 medals. Earlier in the games Johnson was narrowly edged o … Tags: Balance Beam, Gold Medal, Gymnastic Events, Johnson Johnson, Olympic Games, Olympics, Roommate, Score, Shawn Johnson, Silver Medals, Teammate, Two Women, World Champion

A Brief History of GymnasticsPosted by: Mr.Admin in Gymnastic Sites and The Best ArticlesGymnastics as we know it dates back to ancient Greece. The early Greeks practiced gymnastics to prepare for war. Activities like jumping, running, discus throwing, wrestling, and boxing helped develop the muscles needed for hand-to-hand combat. Additional fitness practices used by the ancient Greeks included methods for mounting and dismounting a horses and a variety of circus performance skills. Gymnastics became a central component of ancient Greek education and was mandatory for all students. Gymnasia, buildings with open-air courts where the training took place, evolved into schools where gymnastics, rhetoric, music, and mathematics were taught. The ancinet Olympic Games were born near this time. As the Roman Empire ascended, Greek gymnastics for was more or less turned into military training. In 393 AD the Emperor Theodosius abolished the Olympic Games completely. The games had become corrupt, and gymnastics, along with other sports declined. For centuries, gymnastics was all but … Tags: Ancient Greece, Ancient Greek Education, Ancient Greeks, Brief History Of Gymnastics, Central Component, Centuries, Circus Performance, Early Greeks, Emperor Theodosius, Gymnastics Music, Hand To Hand Combat, History Of Gymnastics, Military Training, Muscles, Olympic Games, Other Sports, Performance Skills, Rhetoric, Roman Empire, War ActivitiesIt is also a very natural sport involving activities that people would normally do outside gym class or gymnastic competitions such as jumping, running, climbing, swinging and tumbling. Modern gymnastics as a sport involves the performance of a series of movements. These activities and movements require flexibility, physical strength and kinesthetic awareness. Most of the movements involved developed from the many fitness exercises that soldiers in Ancient Greece used. Gymnastics is also considered a somewhat difficult and dangerous sport because gymnasts are constantly exposed to injury. Gymnastics today is a sport that has six different disciplines: artistic gymnastics, rhythmic gymnastics, sports aerobics, sports acrobatics, trampoline work, and general gymnastics. Among these disciplines, artistic and rhythmic gymnastics are the two most popular and is part of the Summer Olympic Games held every four years. Rhythmic gymnastics on the other hand is performed mostly by women athlete … Tags: Ancient Greece, Artistic Gymnastics, Athlete, Competitions, Dangerous Sport, Disciplines, Exposed, Fitness Exercises, Flexibility, Gym Class, Gymnastics Sports, Gymnasts, Kinesthetic Awareness, Natural Sport, Olympic Games, Physical Strength, Rhythmic Gymnastics, Sports Acrobatics, Sports Aerobics, Summer Olympic GamesInteresting Websites : Interesting Websites :
