Yet, all gymnasts begin from simple instructions for simple movements and techniques that are the foundation from which more complex and difficult techniques develop. Here in this article we will discuss two of the most basic gymnastic techniques. The cartwheel - First, stand in a lunge with your weight on your favorite leg (depends if you are left or right sided), bend your knees slightly and raise your arms. Reach forward with your right arm, assuming you are right handed, and kick your left leg up simultaneously. The left hand must follow instantly and as the hand touches the ground the right leg must be off the ground too. You will then do a straddle handstand momentarily. Afterwards, your left leg will touch the ground first followed by the right. Finish the cartwheel with the lunge position but the opposite leg is now in front. The handstand This is one of the most important skills in gymnastics. For a gymnast to proceed to more complex skills, he must first perfect the handst …

Pool Party Craps This game needs some advance planning, but is certain to keep your guests in and out of the water laughing. Find a large pair of plastic dice warning, they will get wet! Write out a task for each number combination that the roller must perform upon rolling. For example if the player rolls a 1 and 5 they must perform a cannonball off the diving board. For a 6 and 3 the player must do a handstand in the shallow end. Make up a special move for snakeyes or doubles to add extra excitement. This game can go on and on as long as the players are having a great time. SWIM This is the pool version of the basketball game HORSE. Everyone who wants to play should line up at the diving board; those who do not wish to play are considered to be the judges panel. The first diver gets to pick the jump or dive that all must perform from the diving board. It could be any move from a cannonball to taking the NESTLE Plunge. If the diver cannot do the selected move or chooses not to they …

I have seen gymnasts benefit from the general strength exercises such as push ups, but when it comes time to perform certain skills the gymnast’s muscles are not always prepared, accustomed to the sequence of movements for the skills, or strong enough in each position required to safely complete the skill. Gymnasts really need a variety of training to include sport specific training besides general strength conditioning in order to more closely simulate the skills in our sport. For example, many straight arm exercises such as the front lateral raise, press handstand, or planche drills more closely simulate gymnastics skills than bent arm exercises such as the push up, bench press, or reverse dips. Here is one straight arm exercise that has helped many gymnasts strengthen their chest, shoulders, and back muscles, becoming stronger in two very important motions. Since the gymnast often must be able to open and close the shoulder angle during skills on uneven bars, I have included a very …

What a lot of people do no realize is that these men used gymnastics and bodyweight moves to gain their freakish strength. One of the movements most utilized today with wrestlers as well as many other athletes along with power lifters is the wall walk. Essentially, you are walking on your hands and the full version takes you to the brink. When you are first starting out, there are a lot of people who cannot or never have been able to get a full hand stand. If you are one of these people, you are going to have to perfect that handstand before you can take on the challenge of the wall walk. If you are already past the challenge of the regular hand stand, then you are ready to give wall walking a serious shot. I will warn you that if you have any signs or symptoms of vertigo or dizziness on a regular basis, you will not want to attempt this at all. Doing so could make your symptoms more recurrent or worse. No one wants to get up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom, ge …

I should have named them after race car drivers. They take chances. They are daring. I could sell tickets. These cats can be fast and love to see who is the fastest. It starts in the morning. The first event is the who can make it to the food bowl first race. It does not matter if I have not put any cat food in the food bowl yet. I only have to put my feet on the floor to start this exciting event. From a lazy position to a run in less than one second, both cats are racing to the bowls. One of the cats is usually faster than the other but, sometimes, the slow one will pull a surprise cut off maneuver. She will fly through and around the legs of chairs, the table and astoundingly beat the faster cat to the bowls. If luck is on her side, sometimes the faster cat goes sliding right by the food bowls and the slow cat wins by default. She is so proud. The next event is the water bowl race. This is more of a sprint, since the water bowl is close to the cat food bowls. The faster cat usually …

However, certain very basic gymnastics elements are allowed and it is simpler to list what is actually permitted rather than what is not, these are called pre-acrobatic elements. 1. Forward or backward roll performed without flight i.e. not a dive forward roll 2. Splits, when performed as a fluid movement and without an obvious stop in the splits position. 3. Supporting weight on the hand or hands but again without stopping, and without the body reaching a vertical position, as in a handstand. 4. Support on the chest or shoulders without stopping in this position. From the above list, it is apparent that there is little room for the agility of gymnastics, especially as there is an additional rule stating that no more than three of these pre-acrobatic elements are allowed in any one routine. You will perhaps notice that the sideways roll is not included in this list, because it is not counted as an acrobatic element at all. Gymnasts have pounced upon this loophole and used it to provid …
