Young people with vision problems can also feel socially isolated and very vulnerable to exploitation. Attending dance movement sessions can bring numerous benefits on many different levels. The pupils learn to listen to instructions and become a member of a group. They learn to express feelings and emotions physically in a non-aggressive manner. Familiarity with their bodies is increased and they learn to use them creatively. Physical flexibility, co-ordination and cardiovascular fitness all improve. Classes are team-building and confidence enhancing. The participants discover that the whole of their bodies can register feelings of touch. Arms, legs, feet, knees, back or butt all feed back sensations of touch. I thought this book was very helpful in finding ways to liven up my classes with my younger students. Everyone knows it’s not easy to come up with something new and fun to do and this is a great book that helps with just that. It’s got games for kids in kindergarten up to grade school and has helpful hints on safety for your kids. It’s also got a chart that helps with finding the best games for different levels of experience for each youngster. I’d say that it is a fun book and a great find. I think it is well worth the price I bought it for.

The reality is that gymnastics is a great “gateway” sport, that is, it prepares any child for a higher level of participation in many activities because of the confidence developed and body awareness attained - both attributes of gymnastics training. There are also different levels of competition that don’t have to lead to Olympic competition or years of grueling training. By that, I mean that routines developed by USA Gymnastics can be used by AAU (Amateur Athletic Union), YMCA, school, and recreational programs without the emphasis on competition for competition’s sake but for learning how to perform, learning to enjoy the competitive experience, and learning how to express oneself through movement.
