There are few if any people out there who know more about the sport of gymnastics. In 1981 Bela defected from Romania which accounts for his funny accent. In 2008 he is covering gymnastics for NBC alongside Bob Costas. Bela Karolyi would seem to be the ideal choice to provide commentary on Olympic gymnastics. Except for one thing. He is very difficult to understand. The ability to understand Mr. Karolyi is further complicated by the fact that when he gets excited he talks faster. By the time I have figured out what he said in the beginning there is a complete volume that I have missed. I was wore out by the time he was done giving his commentary. It was literally work trying to decipher his golden nuggets of input. You may perceive from the tone of this article from the beginning that I am going to suggest that NBC could have picked a better analyst for women’s gymnastics. That is certainly not the case. I must conclude that in the end it was worth the effort. He certainly is a wealth …

The USA National Gymnastics Team Uses a Sports Psychologist The U.S. National Gymnastics Team has been seriously working with sports psychologists since at least 1992, after the Barcelona Olympics, dealing with problems such as overly high expectations, pressure and stress management. In the areas the mental training program has utilized, there seems to be credible evidence that this program has been a success and contributed to the success of the United States in International competition. Self-Esteem vs. Scream One of the most important aspects for a mental training program is the creation of a positive gymnastics environment. In spite of this, it seems the typical gymnastics coach is more apt to follow the Bela Karolyi School of Yelling, Screaming and Negative Feedback. Perhaps his screaming succes …

Like most spectators, I had always watched the sport of gymnastics with awe, and amazement as the gymnasts would tumble with power and strength and then in a split second show their elegance through dance. They would swing on the bars, moving from low bar to high, release and re-grasp, and dismount with their feet stuck firmly to the mat. Then they mounted the beam and tumbled like they were on the floor, (sometimes losing sight of the apparatus), flipping and landing on it. The fascination of this was that these tiny, but strong girls performed with incredible ease. At 13 I wanted to experience the victory that Nadia Comaneci and her coach Bela Karolyi acquired when Nadia scored the first ever perfect 10 in an Olympic Games. My dream was to someday meet this astonishing, inspirational woman. A few years after graduating college I decided to pursue this gymnastics phenomenon. After training with some coaches in NY I accepted a coaching job in a recreational and competitive gym in Mary …
