Johnson beat her friend and teammate Nastia Liukin on the balance beam in the last of the Olympic games gymnastic events to win the Gold. Johnson performed a powerful routine, as always. The 7.0 start value of her routine was the highest in the competition. She finished with a huge grin, scoring 16.225 to take over the lead. Liukin went next. Though she is the reigning world champion on the beam, her start value was 6.6, the third lowest among the eight final competitors. Her routine was graceful and smooth, as opposed to Johnson’s routine which was filled with difficult tricks. She finished with a 16.025 score, not good enough to pass Johnson, her on-going rival and Olympic roommate. Johnson who had already won 3 Silver medals was ecstatic to finally win a Gold in her final chance of this Olympics.
