Variety is essential, and the use of different directions and different levels can produce very creative movements. You should aim to work with the apparatus in new and unusual ways as well as around the established characteristics of each piece and to provide interesting and well judged exercises. I would not recommend beginners to acquire gymnastic clubs at all. Apart from the expense and the fact that there is no real substitute they are also difficult to work with and are regarded as being more advanced. Because of the intricacies of working with two clubs simultaneously, and because the throwing and catching technique, even of small juggling elements, has to be co-coordinated and controlled, they can be quite dangerous. However, some simple swinging moves are beneficial and effective for both general coordination practice and as a visual display.
