If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting! I have seen gymnasts benefit from the general strength exercises such as push ups, but when it comes time to perform certain skills the gymnast’s muscles are not always prepared, accustomed to the sequence of movements for the skills, or strong enough in each position required to safely complete the skill. Gymnasts really need a variety of training to include sport specific training besides general strength conditioning in order to more closely simulate the skills in our sport. For example, many straight arm exercises such as the front lateral raise, press handstand, or planche drills more closely simulate gymnastics skills than bent arm exercises such as the push up, bench press, or reverse dips. Here is one straight arm exercise that has helped many gymnasts strengthen their chest, shoulders, and back muscles, becoming stronger in two very important motions. Since the gymnast often must be able to open and close the shoulder angle during skills on uneven bars, I have included a very …

Usually, this means the girls show talent in flexibility and strength; however, both of these can be improved upon with further training in the TOPs program. TOPs is a separate program from any other training, including team training programs, and therefore, requires extra practice time. An extension of this is Baby TOPs, which is designed for girls who show talent but have not made it to any team training level. Once they are identified as having potential, the girls are tested briefly by their coaches to identify any deficits in their skills. The purpose of the program is to provide training to correct these deficits. The training class also works on flexibility and strength with specific conditioning exercises. At the end of each training year, the girls are then tested on their skills. This TOPs testing takes place over the summer, in the months of June and July. First, the girls are tested locally in several skills areas; and if they succeed in performing at the highest level, th …

This grip will also allow more hand contact with the bar, yet protect the advanced gymnast from rips. The Just Right Grip is constructed of the same high quality leather as a standard grip, but is cut more narrowly and closes with a buckle for greater support and stability. More and more people understand that giving drugs in order to cure a disease, or giving relief to its symptoms, can’t be the only treatment given. More and more find more common the opinion that drugs alone can’t do the whole healing work. There has to be more means. The conventional psychiatric drugs are used to contradict the direct symptoms of the psychiatric illness and to relief its symptoms, where the other complementary treatment is used to treat the body as a whole and not only as a way of displaying one specific illness. This is exactly why it is better to combine between conventional drugs and a supplementary treatment such as massage, remedies, acupuncture, therapy and so on. Treating your body as a whole was a common thing in the old era when people understood that in order to treat a disease right, you should treat your body as a complex organism and not as a collection of different organs. A holistic treatment includes - conversation therapy, gymnastic, taking a diet, qu …

Then when my parents scrambled for cheap Thai massages in Bangkok, I subconsciously compartmentalized massages to an older person’s sport. However, after you slog it out for a couple of years in the workforce, you discover that the apple has not fallen that far from the tree when you start to occasionally indulge in the healing rituals of “wellness” with massages, amalgamated from different lands, swirling spa pools, oxygenated rooms, all in an ambience heretofore known only to luxury island hoppers. As a self-proclaimed but not a certifiable spa aficionado, I shall share with you what little I’ve gleaned from sampling the spa menus in Singapore (and some say Batam). For my encounters of the spa kind, I have attempted the Oriental Tui Na, Balinese Spa, Javanese Massage & Scrub (with Mandi Lulur or Milk Bath), Aromatherapy, Hydrotherapy, Ayurvedic spa, Hot Stone Therapy, Swedish and Deep Tissue massage. My humble “101 manual” for the future Spa connoisseur (dare I hope), is here with s …

The workout is based on a recovery concept. Your body actually responds to a workout during the rest and recovery period following exercise. It is during this time that the muscle rebuilding and repairing response takes place, as well as the cardiovascular adaptations that boost the metabolism and allow your body to more efficiently use oxygen and maintain fitness. By using a push-pull cycle combined with a light-heavy pattern, this workout allows for optimal recovery and maximum results. Each lifting day is completed as a circuit, moving from one exercise to the next with minimal rest. Every circuit is completed a total of five times. Five sets, which may seem high for volume, will fatigue the muscle to a much greater extent than fewer sets, which is one of the reasons this routine achieves results with a relatively small number of exercises. To allow for good lifting form, a 45-60 second rest is recommended after each circuit. Your heart rate will stay very high during th …

What is being performed under the apparatus will dictate the speed and the angle of the throw. Knowing also that it is important to show a variety of throws and catches, it is necessary to use different grips and different directions. However, before any of these more complex techniques can be attempted, the basic throw must be mastered. Because this skill has to be performed with the use of one hand only, I would recommend that the beginner starts with the hoop as it is easier to grip and control. Hold the hoop in the right hand in over grasp and swing the arm down to the side and back, keeping the hoop parallel to the body. As the arm goes back, the wrist will be cocked with the back of the hand facing the floor, the grip should be firm. Next, the arm swings through to stretch forwards and upwards into the throwing action. Try to keep the arm as straight as possible; this will be difficult if it is too close to the body because the hoop will hit the floor. Remember to keep the arm a …
